ADDITION AND SUBTRACTION WORD PROBLEMS WORKSHEET

Problem 1 :

There were  and 27 pounds of beef and 21 pounds of chicken. How many more pounds of beef are there than chicken?

Mr. Benjamin invested $500 in a stock. In one day, he got a profit of $122, loss of $75 per day for two consecutive days and profit of $58 per day for three consecutive days. Determine the present value of the stock.

Liam typed 12 lines in the first 20 minutes, 17 lines in the next 30 minutes and 8 lines in the last 10 minutes of an hour. Find the total number of lines he typed in one hour.

Four places P, Q, R and S are on a straight line as shown below.

The distance between P and Q is 52 miles, Q and R is 84 miles and that of R and S is 129 miles. Find the distance between P and S.

Problem 12 :

Four places P, Q, R and S are on a straight line as shown below.

Mr. Lucas travelled from P to Q, then Q to R and R to S. The distance between P and Q is 52 miles and that of Q and R is 100 miles. If S is a place halfway between Q and R, find the total distance travelled by Mr. Lucas.

Distance between P and S :

= PQ + QR + RS 

= 52 + 84 + 129

= 265 miles

12. Answer :

Distance between P and Q = 52 miles

Distance between Q and R = 100 miles

Since S is the place halfway between Q and R, 

distance between Q and R = 50 miles

Total distance travelled by Mr. Lucas :

= PQ + QR + RS

= 52 + 100 + 50

= 202 miles
