Lily had $100. Lily's father gave her $200. With this money, she spent $150 for dresses and gave $120 for her friend. How much money did Lily have left?
Solution :
100 + 200 - 150 - 120 = 30

Problem 7 :
There are 1500 books in a library in which 1100 books are in English, 120 books are in French and the rest are in Spanish. Find the number of books in Spanish.
Solution :
1500 - 1100 - 120 = 280

Problem 8 :
Daniel had $500. He kept $200 for himself. In the remaining, he gave $80 to his friend and donated the rest to a charity. How much money did Daniel donate to the charity?
Solution :
500 - 200 - 80 = 220
Daniel donated $220 to the charity.
Problem 9 :
Mr. Dustin invested $250 in a stock. In one day, he got a profit of $45, loss of $53 per day for two consecutive days and profit of $35 per day for three consecutive days. Determine the present value of the stock.
Solution :
250 + 45 - 53 - 53 + 35 + 35 + 35 = 294
The present value of the stock is $294.
Problem 10 :
In a word document, Jessica typed 45 lines in the first hour, 42 lines in the second hour and 53 lines in the third hour. Since there were some mistakes, she deleted the last 18 lines. Find the total number of lines in the document now.
Solution :
45 + 42 + 53 - 18 = 122
Total number of lines in the word document now is 122.
Problem 11 :
Four places A, B, C and D are on a straight line as shown below.
The distance between A and B is 52 miles, B and C is 84 miles and that of C and D is 129 miles. Find the distance between A and D.
Solution :
Distance between A and D :
= AB + BC + CD
= 52 + 84 + 129
= 265 miles
Problem 12 :
Four places A, B, C and D are on a straight line as shown below.
Mr. Alex travelled from A to B, then B to C and C to D. The distance between A and B is 52 miles and that of B and C is 100 miles. If D is a place halfway between B and C, find the total distance travelled by Mr. Alex.
Solution :
Distance between A and B = 52 miles
Distance between B and C = 100 miles
Since D is the place halfway between B and C,
distance between C and D = 50 miles
Total distance travelled by Mr. Alex :
= AB + BC + CD
= 52 + 100 + 50
= 202 miles
