DIFFERENT WAYS TO WRITE A NUMBER

Three different ways to write a number are 

Standard Form :

This is a way to write a number showing only its digits. This is the form we are most familiar with and see most often.

Example :

5,673,289

Expanded Form :

This is a way to write a number as the sum of the value of its digits. This form indicates the place value of each digit  in the number. 

Example :

5,000,000 + 600,000 + 70,000 + 3,000 + 200 + 80 + 9

Word Form :

This is a way to write a number in words only, also need to include commas separating the periods. If there are commas in standard form, there must be commas in word form.

Example :

Five million, six hundred seventy three thousand, two hundred and eighty nine

Practice Questions

Question 1 :

Convert the number given below to standard form.

Two million, five hundred seventy three thousand, two hundred seventy one.

Answer :

So, standard form of the given number is

2,573,271

Question 2 :

Convert the number given below to standard form.

Seventy five  million, sixty three thousand, five hundred.

Answer :

So, the standard form of the given number is

75,063,500

Question 3 :

Convert the number given below to word form.

56,623,589

Answer :

So, the expanded form of the given number is

Fifty six million, six hundred twenty three thousand, five hundred eighty one

Question 4 :

Convert the number given below to expanded form.

7,856,254

Answer :

So, the expanded form is,

7,000,000 + 800,000 + 50,000 + 6,000 + 200 + 4

Question 5 :

Convert the number given below to standard form.

2,085,162

Answer :

So, the expanded form is,

2,000,000 + 80,000 + 5,000 + 100 + 60 + 2

Note : 

In examples 4 and 5, to get expanded form, each digit of the number to be multiplied by the value of its place and add them together.

For example, in 4562, 4 is at thousands place. So 4 has to be multiplied by 1000 and we get 4000.

In the same way, we have to multiply each digit by the value of its place to expanded form.
