FIND THE CONSTANT OF PROPORTIONALITY FROM A GRAPH

If the ratio of one variable to the other is constant, then the two variables have a proportional relationship,

If x and y have a proportional relationship, the constant of proportionality is the ratio of y to x.

In this section, we will learn, how to find the constant of proportionality from a graph.

Example 1 :

John wants to save up some money to buy a new smartphone, so she babysits on the weekends.

There is a proportional relationship between the time Dedra spends babysitting (in hours), x, and the amount of money she earns babysitting (in dollars),

What is the constant of proportionality?

Solution :

To find the constant of proportionality, we have to mark a point on the graph.

In the graph above, we have marked a point (1, 10). To find the constant of proportionality, we have to divide the value of y by x.

In the point (1, 10), we have x = 1 and y = 10.

y/x = 10/1

y/x = 10

So, the constant of proportionality is 10.

Example 2 :

The graph below represents the total number of plants and number of seed packets used. What is the constant of proportionality?

Solution :

To find the constant of proportionality, we have to mark a point on the graph.

In the graph above, we have marked a point (2, 20). To find the constant of proportionality, we have to divide the value of y by x.

In the point (2, 20), we have x = 2 and y = 20.

y/x = 20/2

y/x = 10

So, the constant of proportionality is 10.

Example 3 :

The graph below represents the total number of cups of coffee and the total amount of sugar required to make the coffee. What is the constant of proportionality?

Solution :

To find the constant of proportionality, we have to mark a point on the graph.

In the graph above, we have marked a point (8, 40). To find the constant of proportionality, we have to divide the value of y by x.

In the point (8, 40), we have x = 8 and y = 40.

y/x = 40/8

y/x = 5

So, the constant of proportionality is 5.

Example 4 :

The graph below represents the packets of biscuits consumed over time. What is the constant of proportionality?

Solution :

To find the constant of proportionality, we have to mark a point on the graph.

In the graph above, we have marked a point (2, 10). To find the constant of proportionality, we have to divide the value of y by x.

In the point (2, 10), we have x = 2 and y = 10.

y/x = 10/2

y/x = 5

So, the constant of proportionality is 5.
