HOW TO ROUND DECIMALS TO THE NEAREST TENTH

In the number above, the first digit (7) after the decimal point is tenth, the second digit (2) is hundredth and the third digit (9) is thousandth.

To round a decimal to the nearest tenth, look at the digit at hundredths place.

(i) If it is 5 or more, increase the digit at tenths place by one (round up) and drop all the digits to the right of tenths place. 

(ii) If it is less than 5, leave the digit at tenths place as it is and drop all the digits to the right of tenths place.

Example 1 :

Round 1.589 to the nearest tenth.

Answer :

Since we are rounding 1.589 to the nearest tenth, look at the digit at hundredths place. The digit at hundredths place is 8, which is greater than 5.

So, add 1 to the digit 5 at tenths place and drop all the digits to the right of 5.

Therefore, 1.589 rounded to the nearest tenth is 1.6.

Example 2 :

Round 7.34 to the nearest tenth.

Answer :

Since we are rounding 7.34 to the nearest tenth, look at the digit at hundredths place. The digit at hundredths place is 4, which is less than 5.

So, keep the digit 3 at tenths place as it is and drop the digit 4 to the right of 3.

Therefore, 7.34 rounded to the nearest tenth is 7.3.

Example 3 :

Round 9.0514 to the nearest tenth.

Answer :

Since we are rounding 9.0514 to the nearest tenth, look at the digit at hundredths place. The digit at hundredths place is 5.

So, add 1 to the digit 0 at tenths place and drop all the digits to the right of 0.

Therefore, 9.0514 rounded to the nearest tenth is 9.1.

Example 4 :

Round 8.9601 to the nearest tenth.

Answer :

Since we are rounding 8.9601 to the nearest tenth, look at the digit at hundredths place. The digit at hundredths place is 6, which is greater than 5.

So, add 1 to the digit 9 at tenths place and drop all the digits to the right of 9.

Therefore, 8.9601 rounded to the nearest tenth is 9.0.

Examples 5-6 : Round each of the following numbers to the nearest tenth :

The digit at tenths place in 6.48 is 4.

The digit to the right of 4 is 8, which is greater than 5.

Then, add 1 to the digit 4 at tenths place and drop the digit 8 to the right of 4.

Therefore, 6.48 rounded to the nearest tenth is 6.5.

Answer :

The digit at tenths place in 2.51 is 5.

The digit to the right of 5 is 1, which is less than 5.

Then, keep the digit 5 at tenths place as it is and drop the digit 1 to the right of 5.

Therefore, 2.51 rounded to the nearest tenth is 2.5.

Example 7 :

In a village of California, 51.58% of the people living are male. Round this figure to the nearest tenth.

Answer :

Since we are rounding 51.58 to the nearest tenth, look at the digit at hundredths place. The digit at hundredths place is 8, which is greater than 5.

So, add 1 to the digit 5 at tenths place and drop the digit 8 to the right of 9.

Therefore, 51.58% rounded to the nearest tenth is 51.6%.

Example 8 :

The radius of a circle is 6.5 cm. Find the circumference of the circle. Use π  3.14 and round your answer to the nearest tenth.

Answer :

Formula for circumference of a circle :

= 2πr

Substitute π  3.14 and r = 6.5.

 2(3.14)(6.5)

= 40.82

We have to round 40.82 to the nearest tenth. Look at the digit hundredths place. The digit at hundredths place is 2, which is less than 5.

So, keep the digit 8 at tenths place as it is and drop the digit 2 to the right of 8.

40.82 rounded to the nearest tenth is 40.8.

Therefore, the circumference of the circle is about 40.8 cm.

Example 9 :

The radius of a circle is 8.5 cm. Find the area of the circle. Use π  3.14 and round your answer to the nearest tenth.

Answer :

Formula for area of a circle :

= πr2

Substitute π  3.14 and r = 8.5.

 (3.14)(8.5)2

(3.14)(72.25)

= 226.865

We have to round 226.865 to the nearest tenth. Look at the digit hundredths place. The digit at hundredths place is 6, which is greater than 5.

So, add 1 to the digit 8 at tenths place and drop all the digits to the right of 8.

226.865 rounded to the nearest tenth is 226.9.

Therefore, the area of the circle is about 226.9 cm2.

Example 10 :

James is asked to round 2.529 to the nearest tenth. His answer is 252.9. Explain the mistake of James and find the correct answer.

Answer :

Instead of rounding to the nearest tenth, James shifted the decimal place.

The correct answer is 2.5.

Example 11 :

Two numbers A and B have 2 decimal places each. A is rounded to the nearest tenth and it is C, B is rounded to the nearest tenth and it is D. Is it possible to have the difference between A and B and the difference between C and D same?

Answer :

Let A = 5.32 and B = 4.22.

The difference between A and B :

= 5.32 - 4.22

= 1.1

Given : A to the nearest tenth, it is C and B is rounded to the nearest tenth, it is D.

Then, C = 5.3 and D = 4.2.

The difference between C and D :

= 5.3 - 4.2

= 1.1

The difference between A and B and the difference between C and D are are same.

Yes, it is possible to have the difference between A and B and the difference between C and D same.

Example 12 :

A number after rounded to the nearest tenth is 14.3. Write down 10 different possible numbers that they could be rounded.
