HOW TO SUBTRACT LINEAR EXPRESSIONS

A linear expression is a mathematical statement which contains a constant and variable or variables where the highest exponent of the variable is 1. If there is more than one variable, the variables must either be in addition or subtraction.

Examples of linear expressions :

5y + 1

3x + 2y - 1

Subtracting Linear Expressions

The following steps will be useful to subtract linear expressions.

Step 1 :

Use distributive property to distribute negative sign to the terms in the second parentheses.

Step 2 :

Group the like terms.

Step 3 :

Combine like terms.

Example 1 :

Subtract (-6p - 8) from (-3p - 6).

Solution :

= (-6p - 8) - (-3p - 6)

Use Distributive Property.

= -6p - 8 + 3p + 6

Group the like terms.

= (-6p + 3p) + (-8 + 6)

Combine the like terms.

= (-3p) + (-2)

= -3p - 2

Example 2 :

Subtract (-z - 8) and (6z - 5).

Solution :

= (6z - 5) - (-z - 8)

= 6z - 5 + z + 8

Group the like terms.

= (6z + z) + (-5 + 8)

Combine the like terms.

= 7z + 3

Example 3 :

Subtract (9p - 5q) from (-10p + 6q).

Solution :

= (-10p + 6q) - (9p - 5q)

Use Distributive Property.

= -10p + 6q - 9p + 5q

Group the like terms.

= (-10p - 9p) + (6q + 5q)

Combine the like terms.

= -19p + 11q

Example 4 :

Subtract (6a - 3b) from (7a - 5b).

Solution :

(7a - 5b) - (6a - 3b)

= 7a - 5b - 6a + 3b

Group the like terms.

= (7a - 6a) + (-5b + 2b)

Combine the like terms.

= (a) + (-3b)

= a - 3b

Example 5 :

Subtract (-5a - 7b - 6) from (2a + 5b + 7).

Solution :

(2a + 5b + 7) - (-5a - 7b - 6)

Use Distributive Property.

2a + 5b + 7 + 5a + 7b + 6

Group the like terms.

= (2a + 5a) + (5b + 7b) + (7 + 6)

Combine the like terms.

= 7a + 12b + 13

Example 6 :

Subtract (4x - 4y + 2) from (-8x - y - 7).

Solution :

(-8x - y - 7) - (4x - 4y + 2)

Use Distributive Property.

-8x - y - 7 - 4x + 4y - 2

Group the like terms.

= (-8x - 4x) + (-y + 4y) + (-7 - 2)

Combine the like terms.

= (-12x) + (3y) + (-9)

= -12x + 3y - 9

Example 7 :

Subtract 2(p - q) from 3(5p - q + 3).

Solution :

= 3(5p - q + 3) - 2(p - q)

Use Distributive Property.

= 3(5p) + 3(-q) + +3(3) - 2(p) - 2(-q)

= 15p - 3q + 9 - 2p + 2q

Group the like terms.

= (15p - 2p) + (-3q + 2q) + 9

Combine the like terms.

= (13p) + (-q) + 9

= 13p - q + 9
