INTEGER ADDITION AND SUBTRACTION RULES

Sign of first and second number

What we have to do

 + +

Add both numbers and put "greater number" sign for the answer.

 + -

(or)

 - +

Subtract small number from greater number and put "greater number" sign for the answer.

The above rule is applicable for simplifying any two or more integers, fractions and decimals.

Note: Always we have to put big number symbol for answer.

Integer Addition and Subtraction Rules - Examples

Example 1 :

Find the sum of -12 + 7

Solution :

Since the sign of both numbers are different, we have to subtract the smaller number from larger number and put the greater number sign.

-12 + 7  =  -5

Hence the answer will have negative sign.

Example 2 :

Find the sum of -10 - 7

Solution :

Since both numbers are having same signs, we have to add and put greater number sign.

-10 - 7 = -17

Hence the answer will have negative sign.

Example 3 :

Find the sum of -6 + 12

Solution :

Since the sign of both numbers are different, we have to subtract the smaller number from larger number and put the greater number sign.

-6 + 12 = 6

Hence the answer will have positive sign.

Example 4 :

Find the sum of -30 + 10

Solution :

Since the sign of both numbers are different, we have to subtract the smaller number from larger number and put the greater number sign.

-30 + 10 = -20

Hence the answer will have negative sign.

Example 5 :

Find the sum of 3 + 4

Solution :

Since both numbers are having same signs, we have to add and put greater number sign.

3 + 4 = 7

Hence the answer will have positive sign.

Example 6 :

Find the difference of -2 - (-2)

Solution :

  =   -2 - (-2)

  =  -2 + 2

  =  0

Example 7 :

Find the difference of -8 - (-6)

Solution :

  =   -8 - (-6)

  =  -8 + 6

Now these two numbers are having different signs, so we have to subtract from smaller number from greater number and put greater number sign.

  =  -2

Hence the answer will have negative sign.

Example 8 :

Find the difference of 8 - (-5)

Solution :

  =   8 - (-5)

  =  8 + 5

Now these two numbers are having same signs, so we have to add 8 and 5 and put greater number sign.

  =  13

Hence the answer will have positive sign.

Example 9 :

Find the difference of 10 - (-16)

Solution :

  =   10 - (-16)

  =  10 + 16

Now these two numbers are having same signs, so we have to add 10 and 16 and put greater number sign.

  =  26

Hence the answer will have positive sign.

Example 10 :

Find the difference of -38 - (-30)

Solution :

  =   -38 - (-30)

  =  -38 + 30

Now these two numbers are having different signs, so we have to subtract from smaller number from greater number and put greater number sign.

  =  -8

Hence the answer will have negative sign.
