PARTS OF THREE DIMENSIONAL FIGURES

In geometry, a three-dimensional figure is a solid figure or an object or shape with three dimensions – length, width and height. Unlike two-dimensional shapes, three-dimensional shapes have thickness or depth.

The attributes of a three-dimensional figure are faces, edges and vertices. The three dimensions compose the edges of a 3D geometric shape.

Following are the parts of a three-dimensional figure.

Faces :

The flat surfaces of the 3D shapes are called the faces.

Edge :

The line segment where two faces meet is called an edge.

Vertex :

A vertex is a point where 3 edges meet.

Example 1 :

Name the following three-dimensional figure. Also, find the number of faces, edges and vertices.

Solution :

Name of the shape  =  Triangular Pyramid

Faces :

By observing the above figure, we come to know that there are four faces.

Name of each faces :

Face 1  =  ABD

Face 2  =  ABC

Face 3  =  BCD

Face 4  =  ACD

Edges :

Edges are straight lines used to draw the picture.

To draw the above triangular pyramid, we have used 6 edges. Those are

AC, AB, BC, BD, CD and AD.

Vertices :

Vertices are corners where 3 edges meet.

Here the sides AC, AB and AD are intersecting at the point A. So "A" is one of vertices of the given triangular pyramid. Likewise the edges are B, C and D.

So, the given triangular pyramid is having 4 faces, 6 edges and 4 vertices.

Example 2 :

Name the following three-dimensional figure. Also, find the number of faces, edges and vertices.

Solution :

Name of the shape  =  Cube

Faces :

By observing the above figure, we come to know that there are six faces.

Name of each faces :

Face 1  =  ABCD

Face 2  =  ACEF

Face 3  =  CDEF

Face 4  =  BDHG

Face 5  =  ABEH (Back)

Face 6  =  CDFG (Front)

Edges :

Edges are straight lines used to draw the picture. Here we have used 12 straight lines to draw the a cube.

AB, AC, CD, BD, AE, CF, EF, FG, EH, GH, DG, BH

Vertices :

Vertices are corners where 3 edges meet.

Vertices are A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H.

So, the given cube is having 6 faces, 12 edges and 8 vertices.

Example 3 :

Name the following three-dimensional figure. Also, find the number of faces, edges and vertices.

Solution :

Name of the shape  =  Pentagonal Pyramid

Faces :

By observing the above figure, we come to know that there are six faces.

Name of each faces :

Face 1  =  ABF

Face 2  =  AFE

Face 3  =  AED

Face 4  =  ACD

Face 5  =  ABC

Face 6  =  BCDEF (base)

Edges :

Edges are straight lines used to draw the picture. Here we have used 10 straight lines to draw the a pentagonal prism.

AB, AF, AC, AD, AE, BF, BC, CD, DE, EF

Vertices :

Vertices are corners  where 3 edges meet.

Vertices are A, B, C, D, E, F.

So, the given pentagonal pyramid is having 6 faces, 10 edges and 6 vertices.
