= 0.34x

Amount of acid in (40 - x) mL of 10% acid solution :

= 10% of (40 - x)

= 0.1(40 - x)

= 4 - 0.1x

After mixing both the solutions, amount of acid in the resulting solution :

= 0.34x + 4 - 0.1x

= 0.24x + 4

Given : Resulting solution has 25% acid.

0.24x + 4 = 25% of 40

0.24x + 4 = 0.25(40)

0.24x + 4 = 10

0.24x = 6

x = 25
