Question 1 :
If p = -3 and q = 2, what is the value of p2 – (q – p)?
Solution :
Given statement :
= p2 – (q – p)
By applying the value of p and q in the above expression, we get
= (-3)2 – (2 – (-3))
= 9 – (2 + 3)
= 9 - 5
= 4
Question 2 :
What is the area of triangle ABC?
Solution :
= (1/2) [(30 + 6 + 84) - (24 + 21 + 30)]
= (1/2)[120 - 75]
= (1/2) (45)
= 22.5
Hence the answer is 22 ½ square units.
Question 3 :
If (64/(x-8)) + 7 = 11, what is the value of (64/(x-8)) ?
Solution :
(64/(x-8)) + 7 = 11
Subtract 7 on both sides
(64/(x-8)) = 11 - 7
(64/(x-8)) = 4
Hence the value of (64/(x-8)) is 4 .
Question 4 :
If the diameter of a circle is 6.4 x 108, then the radius of the circle is
Solution :
Diameter of a circle = 6.4 x 108
Radius of the circle = (6.4 x 108 )/2
= 3.2 x 108
Hence the radius of the circle is 3.2 x 108.
Question 5 :
When 1/11 is expressed as a decimal, what digit appears in the 16th place to the right of the decimal point?
Solution :
1/11 = 0.0909.....
The number at the 4th place is 9, since 16 is the multiple of 4, 9 will appear in the 16th place.
Question 6 :
(7)(6) – 6 =
Solution :
= (7)(6) – 6
= 42 - 6
= 36
Hence the answer is 36.
Question 7 :
Fred and Michael collected money for the school trip. Fred collected 50% more than Michael. If Michael collected $150, how much did Fred and Michael collect all together?
Solution :
Let "x" be the money collected by Michael.
Money collected by Fred = x + 50% of x
= x + (x/2)
= 3x/2
Michael collected $150
Money collected by Fred = 3(150)/2
= 3(75)
= 225
Money collected by Fred and Michael = 150 + 225
= $375
Question 8 :
5.835 x 104 is equal to
Solution :
= 5.835 x 104
Since we have positive power, we have to move the decimal 4 digits to the right side.
= 58350
Hence the answer is 58350.
Question 9 :
What is the value of |x - y| + |y – x| if x = 9 and y = 2x?
Solution :
|x - y| + |y – x| if x = 9 and y = 2x
y = 2x
By applying the value of x, we get the value of y.
y = 2(9) = 18
= |x - y| + |y – x|
= |9 - 18| + |18 – 9|
= |-9| + |9|
= 9 + 9
= 18
Hence the answer is 18.
Question 10 :
When 54 is divided by the positive integer N, the quotient is 13 and the remainder is R. The value of R is
Solution :
Division algorithm :
Dividend = Divisor ⋅ quotient + Remainder
54 = N ⋅ 13 + R
13 (4) = 52
By dividing 54 by 4, we get 13 as quotient and 2 as remainder.
Hence the required remainder is 2.
