ADD AND SUBTRACT INTEGERS WORD PROBLEMS

Problem 1 :

Mayor Fauna, leader of the town of Flora, donated 27 oak tree seedlings and 16 seedlings of holly. How many seedlings did he donate altogether? 

Solution :

Number of oak tree seedlings  =  27

Number of holly tree seedlings =  16

From this we need to find the total number of seedlings donated by Mayor Fauna. For that we have to do addition.

Total number of seedling donated = 27 + 16 ==> 43

So, Mayor Fauna donated 43 seedlings.

Problem 2 :

There are 7873 male and 6020 female primary teachers in a city. Find the total number of teachers in the city.

Solution :

Number of male primary teachers  =  7873

Number of female primary teachers  =  6020

From this we need to find the total number of teachers in a city. For that we have to do addition.

Total number of teachers in the city  =  7873 + 6020

So, there are 13893 teachers are in the city.

Problem 3 :

Nina picked a total of 36 apples. She picked 22 Macintosh apples and the rest of the apples were Golden Delicious apples. How many of Nina’s apples were Golden Delicious? Write an equation to solve the problem. 

Solution :

Total number of apples picked by Nina  =  36

Number of macintosh apples + number of golden delicious apples = 36

Let "x" be the number of apples in golden delicious 

22 + x = 36

In order to solve for x we have to subtract 22 on both sides

22 + x - 22 = 36 - 22

x = 14

So, total number of golden delicious apples is 14.

Problem 4 :

Emmett poured 32 glasses of lemonade. He sold 17. How many glasses of lemonade does he have left?

Solution :

Total number of lemonade glass = 32

Number of glasses sold = 17

Number of glasses sold out + number of glasses left = 32 

17 + x = 32

In order to isolate x, we have to subtract by 17 on both sides

17 + x - 17 = 32 - 17

x = 15

Problem 5 :

Some friends were playing at the park. 14 friends went home. Then there were only 10 friends left. How many friends were playing at the start?

Solution :

Let "x" be the number of friends were playing at the start.

Number of friends went home = 14

number of friends left = 10 

Number of friends were playing at the start

= 10 + 14 = 24

Problem 6 :

Marcy had $84 in the bank. She took $39 out of her account. How much does she have in her account now?

Solution :

To find how much does Marcy have in her account now, we have to perform subtraction.

  =  84 - 39

  =  45

So, Marcy has $45 in her account.
