WORD PROBLEMS ON DIVISION

Problem 1 :

Brad’s class collected 320 cans of food. They boxed them in boxes of 40 cans each. How many boxes did they need?

Solution :

To find the number of boxes needed, we should divide the the total number of cans by number of cans in each box.

= 320/40

= 8

So, they need 8 boxes.

Problem 2 :

Mr. Brown plowed 6 acres in 1 hour. At this rate, how long will it take him to plow 21 acres?

Solution :

To find the time to plow 21 acres, we have to divide 21 acres by number of acres plowed in 1 hour.

= 21/6

= 3.5 hours

= 3 hours + 0.5 hours

= 3 hours, (0.5 x 60) minutes

= 3 hours 30 minutes

So, it will take take 3 hours 30 minutes for Mr. Brown to plow 21 acres.

Problem 3 :

Lucy’s youth group raised $1,569 for charity. They decided to split the money evenly among 3 charities. How much will each charity receive?

Solution :

To split $1,569 evenly among 3 charities, we should divide 1569 by 3.

= 1569/3

= 523

So, each Charity will receive $523.

Problem 4 :

Susan traveled 285 miles in 5 hours. Find her speed in miles per hour.

Solution :

To find the speed in miles per hour, we have to find the distance traveled in one hour.

To find the distance traveled in one hour, divide the total distance traveled by time.

= 285/5

= 57

So, Susan's speed is 57 miles per hour.

Problem 5 :

A flight from Pittsburgh to Los Angeles took 5 hours and covered 3,060 miles. What was the plane’s average speed?

Solution :

To find the plane's average speed, divide the distance traveled by time.

= 3060/5

= 612

So, the plane's average speed was 612 miles hour.

Problem 6 :

Raul’s bedroom is 288 inches long. How many yards long is the bedroom?

Solution :

1 yard = 36 inches

To convert 288 inches to yards, divide 288 by 36.

= 288/36

= 8 yards

So, Raul's bedroom is 8 yards long.

Problem 7 :

If 8.5 lbs. of sea food costs $157.25, find the cost of 1 lb of sea food.

Solution :

Given : Cost of 8.5 lbs. is $157.25.

Then, cost of 1 lb is

= 157.25/8.5

= 18.50

So, the cost of 1 lb. of sea food is $18.50.

Problem 8 :

If Jeff burns 1750 calories in 3.5 hours of bicycling, how many calories does he burn per hour?

Solution :

Given : Jeff burns 1750 calories in 3.5 hours.

To find the amount of calories he burns per hour, we should divide 1750 calories by 3.5.

= 1750/3.5

= 500

So, Jeff burns 500 calories per hour.

Problem 9 :

Jessica counted her crayons and found out that she has 121 crayons which she will place in crayon boxes. If each crayon box can contain 11 crayons, find the number of crayon box she needs.

Solution :

There are 121 crayons and each box can contain 11 crayon.

Number of crayon boxes Jessica needs :

= 121/11

= 11

Problem 10 :

Mr. Alex bakes 91 monster brownies for a Halloween party.  If he distributes them equally among 7 of his friends, find the number of brownies each friend gets.

Solution :

There are 91 monster brownies and 7 friends.

Number of brownies each friend get :

= 91/7

= 13

Problem 11 :

James has 6 of boxes apples and he wants to distribute them equally among 10 of his friends. If there  are 5 apples in each box, find the number of apples each friend gets.

Solution :

There are 3 apples in each box.

Number if apples in 6 boxes :

= 6 x 5

= 30

30 apples have to be distributed equally among 10 friends.

Number of apples each friend gets :

= 30/10

= 3

Problem 12 :

Daniel travels 10 miles for every 20 minutes. How many hours does he need to cover 360 miles of distance?

Solution :

Daniel travels 10 miles for every 20 minutes.

20 minutes ----> 10 miles

3(20 minutes) ----> 3(10 miles)

60 minutes ----> 30 miles

1 hour ----> 30 miles

Daniel travels 30 miles in one hour.

Number of hours Daniel needs to cover 360 miles :

= 360/30

= 12

Problem 13 :

A skydiver falls at a rate of 48 feet per second. At the sane rate, how long does he need to fall 144 feet?

Solution :

A skydiver falls at a rate of 48 feet per second.

1 second ----> 48 feet

Time required to fall 144 feet :

= 144/48 seconds

= 3 seconds

Problem 14 :

In a running race, Lily scores 3 points for crossing every 4 feet of distance. If Lily runs a 40 feet of distance, how many 3-points will she get?

Solution :

Lily scores 3 points for crossing every 4 feet of distance.

4 feet ----> 3 points

Number of 3-points Lily gets on 40 feet of distance :

= 40/4

= 10
